The Eyot Centre is a community centre situated on the banks of the River Thames just 300m from the historic Henley Bridge.  As well as hiring out it’s extensive modern facilities to the public, it is also the home of The Henley Canoe Club and The Henley Dragon Boat Club. More recently it has become directly licensed centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The Eyot Centre is a registered charity* which seeks to provide access to social and river based leisure activities primarily to the young people of Henley and surrounding areas.

Based in a picturesque location on the banks of the River Thames, the Centre aims to serve a wide community of differing abilities and social competences, by providing:

  • Leadership and facilities for the local community to engage in regular paddle sport activities.
  • Adventure weeks/weekends combining camping, hiking and paddle sports for local schools, colleges, youth groups and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants.
  • Coaching and training to individuals wishing to gain recognised qualifications in paddle sports activities.
  • Fun and sporting challenges to disadvantaged groups to aid their self-development and team-building skills.
  • Representation of the local youth community at the Henley Town Youth Council.

Activities

The Eyot Centre is home to two thriving paddle sports sections, a D of E section and a water rescue service for community events. In addition, the centre also organises and plays host to a number of competitive events.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Henley Canoe Club coaches follow the British Canoeing (BC) coaching and awards scheme using their range of up to date craft and ancilliary equipment.

Paddling trips are run from the centre to locations across the home countries and abroad including The French Alps.

The club provides a programme of canoeing and kayaking throughout the year. There are club meetings weekly for Youth (14-17 years) and Adult (18+ years) members . During the warmer spring and summer weather we run in addition a club for Junior (9-13 years) members. In the winter we run a series of indoor swimming pool sessions.

Instruction courses are also held for members and non-members on demand.

Dragon Boating

Henley Dragons provides training and competitive dragon boat racing in the British Dragon Boat Association (BDA) league. Currently an adult crew, the team are keen to encourage junior members and to establish a junior team. As well as the BDA league events, the club take part in national events such as the Great River Race and internationally the Vogalonga in Venice. In addition we have members who are part of the GB national squad. But it’s not just about paddling – there is a strong social element too which enjoys skiing and evenings out together. Duke of Edinburgh Awards

The Centre provides coaching for all levels of DofE amd to date has successfully mentored over 200 students through their various tasks, to achieve either Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards.  The scheme offers wonderful opportunities for young people to take an active part in their personal development. Rescue Service

Henley Thames Rescue provides support to community water events along the River Thames from Caversham to Marlow.

Facilities

Water Based

The Eyot Centre owns a wide range of paddle craft suitable for individuals and groups (Maximum 12 to 40 people depending on activity. These craft include

  • Dragon Boats -10 man and 20 man
  • Bell Boats – up to 12 man
  • Open canoes for single and tandem use
  • Kayaks (competitive and general purpose use)

Boat Storage is mainly for club craft. There is limited spaces for privately owned craft.

The site has direct river access from its landing stages and slip.

In addition to the craft we have suitable paddles, personal flotation devices, safety helmets spray decks and other equipment to enable safe and effective use of the craft whilst afloat.

Land Based Facilities

The wet-side facilities of the clubhouse include heated changing rooms, hot showers and toilets.

There is a Fitness/Meeting Room with a range of exercise equipment for general fitness and paddle-based training.

The photo above is of our Meeting/Function Room. It is 8.5m x 14.5 m (123 m2). It has a carpeted floor and will accommodate 100 people seated at 10 person round tables or 150 seated in rows. It is available for lettings. (See below).

Adjacent to the hall is a kitchen with electric water boiler, four burner cooker with electric oven, microwave, and refrigerator. It is designed for serving refreshments. For large functions requiring hot food, a mobile kitchen would be required.

The dry-side facilities have their own separate toilet facilities.

The club house is fully accessible for the less mobile with ramp access. The facilities include a separate changing room with shower and toilet specifically designed for a wheelchair user. There is a covered viewing platform on the river side. Parking is available close to the club house.

All weather vehicle parking is available on site for 35 cars. Additional parking is available on the lawn during suitable weather
